This research paper: A 6 page essay that contrasts and compares Jean-Paul Sartre's play " The Flies" and Jean Anouil's "Antigone, a Tragedy," which are both modern adaptations of ancient Greek plays. Examination of these plays demonstrates that, in both cases, a knowledge of Greek mythology, or of the original plays, is incidental to a modern appreciation of the productions. In both cases, the playwrights intended for their adaptations to focus on modern concerns within a present-day context. Where the playwrights differ, primarily, is in their perspective on the principal thematic thrust of each work. While Sartre endorses the concept of resistance to societal institutions that limit freedom, Anouil paints such resistance as basically futile and pointless. No additional sources cited.
