Number of Pages 5

This research paper: This is a 5 page paper discussing The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. The Prince is a text written in 1505 by Niccolo Machiavelli which describes the political unrest in his home country of Italy and the invasion of Italy by the French. In order to preserve Italy, Machiavelli offers advice to the rulers of Italy on how to maintain a principality by the enforcement of power. The aspect of power is not to be confused with the greatness of the Church which because of its dominance and misperception of its power, has led to Italy’s weakness in the art of war. For princes to maintain their principalities, they must use the power of their own arms and not employ mercenaries for the protection of the principality at whatever cost. A ruler must also gain the popularity of the population and to do so must at least have the perception of maintaining the power with virtue even if that is not the case. Machiavelli did his writing by using an outside perspective of Italy and in doing so provided a political text which has been used by rulers ever since. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
