Dickinson has moments of epiphany when she indicates a oneness with nature, but it is aggression, not passive receptivity that dominates these moments as she “wrests form nature the power to create her poems,” enduring “struggle and acute pain” when necessary (Diehl 36). This examination of Dickinson’s poetry substantiates this position, which is that Dickinson, on the whole, perceived nature as personified, rather than in the abstract, that is, she saw the natural world as Nature, with a capital “N,” an adversary and a mystery to be assailed, rather than embraced.
