It is especially not about the woman deserving to be battered or simply making the decision to leave her abuser. These misconceptions about spousal abuse are part of the reason why this type of domestic violence continues in what is otherwise considered a civilized society as the United States. Women in the throes of spousal abuse do not always realize the resources available to help them –- as well as their children -- escape the physical and psychological exploitation by providing a safe place to stay, medical attention legal guidance, economic assistance and emotional support.
