  • Processes of Gay Identity Development

An 11 page research paper that explores the processes involved in developing a positive gay/lesbian identity. David Leavitt's short story "Territory" describes and suggests a great deal about the problematic nature of relationships that young gays and lesbians have with their families or origin and how this affects their sense of identity. Within the course of Leavitt's narrative, a young man makes the final transition from an insecure adolescent identity toward a more positive fully-adult identity that is inclusive of his sexual orientation. The issues raised by Leavitt provide a rough framework for further discussion about the problems inherent in establishing a sense of an adult-self within the context of alternative sexual orientation. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

  • Policy of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' and Gays in the Military

A 14 page examination of a very complex issue. The author asserts the military's approach is short-sited. The military must open its eyes and look to other professional arenas where the issue of homosexuality has taken a more visible stance. Despite the continued protest from those that oppose allowing alternate sexual orientation to surface in the military, the military is a place of employment and the same concerns which arise in regard to homosexual right emerge there just as they do among civilians. One's sexual orientation does not impact one's ability to do a job. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

  • Social Barriers of Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation

A 5 page discussion of the numerous societal barriers and limitations which are put in place on the basis of race, gender, and sexual orientation. Contends that since the advent of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, societal restrictions and limitations made on the basis of gender and race have slowly lessened. The reason for this change is the willingness of individuals to stand up for their basic rights, to exert their differences and to insist that there be no societal differentiation based on those differences. While there has been tremendous progress in regard to societal equality of the races and genders, however, there are still many barriers and limitations which are imposed on such factors as sexual orientation. The author contends that these restrictions and limitations can be overcome as well. All that is needed is the willingness to do so and the fortitude to stand in the face of all resistance. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

  • The Netherlands and the Law's Role in the Development of Social Attitudes Regarding Euthanasia and Gay Rights

This is a 9 page paper discussing how the homosexual right laws and euthanasia laws in The Netherlands reflect society’s attitudes. Two basic perspectives are considered in regards to the role of the law in society. One is that the role of the law is to reflect society’s attitudes and throughout the process of social change through history, so too will the law reflect these changes. On the other hand, some governments or countries believe that the role of the law is to force or control social change. In the latter case, the law may or may not change through the process of social change. In today’s society, laws generally reflect society’s attitudes and social change as can be seen in the constantly changing, amending, updating and reversal of many of the laws which used to be enforced. These transitions in the law as a reflection of social change can be seen in some of the recent changes in laws pertaining to homosexual partnerships and euthanasia in The Netherlands. Changes in the law reflect societal attitudes to the extent where countries which have changed their laws to suit society’s changing attitudes are seen as more open and accepting of societal changes than those which do not. There are also some countries in which the law remains a controlling force for social change as seen in the one child policy in China. Bibliography lists 14 sources.

  • Literature for Young Adults and Homosexuality

This 6 page personal essay discusses homosexuality and the fact that it should be presented in young adult literature along with any other issue that will have an impact on a young person’s life. The author points out that there are people who think of it as a the most heinous of sins “against nature” and others who believe it is of no more relevance than the color of one’s eyes. And, of course, there are others who are convinced that they “aren’t bothered” by gays and lesbians but don’t understand why “they can’t just keep to themselves.” Each of these attitudes are attitudes which have evolved as the result of personal experience and belief systems, most of which were established before a person reached adulthood. What an adolescent or teen reads serves as an important component in shaping his or her beliefs. To deny that homosexuality exists r to declare it as a perversion or sin only serves to negate the existence of an entire group of people. No sources listed.

Bibliography lists 14 sources.

  • Homosexuality and Family Acceptance

A 6 page essay/research paper that looks at Gloria Feliciano's play "Between Blessings," which is a poignant account of a twenty-eight year old Puerto Rican son, Diego, finally telling his proud, macho, traditionalist father that he is gay. In this work, Feliciano's use of language and dramatic devices serves to expand the scope of the play beyond the immediate domestic situation between father and son and, in so doing, brings up issues of culture and religiosity, specifically the stand of the Roman Catholic Church on homosexuality. This factor of the play is achieved by framing the confrontation between Diego and his father within scenes that feature a family friend, Father David, a priest who is also homosexual. Some have argued that the author's anxieties with regard to his own homosexuality represents a subtle but obvious enough underlying theme. Although the characters in Oscar Wilde's stories are all in heterosexual relationships, critics contend that there exists an undercurrent of homosexual desire between and among the main characters. They cite that in many of his works, exposure of a secret sin or indiscretion and consequent disgrace is central in design, clearly symbolizing the author's penchant toward homosexuality throughout his literary creations. The writer discusses how one only needs to peruse the myriad pages of Wilde's works in order to ascertain the truth: there is no homosexual reference, hidden or otherwise. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

  • Society, Power, Gender and Sexuality

22 pages in length. Termed the battle of the sexes, struggles between the male and female gender have existed since the time of man. Neanderthal populations were segregated by gender no differently than contemporary society is today, with the only appreciable distinction between the two eras being that of a chink in the patriarchal armor that occurred during the twentieth century. Indeed, the issues pertaining to the history of sexuality are grand and far-reaching, having been hashed and rehashed for centuries, only to encompass a new and growing crop of issues such content as homosexuality and gender oppression. • Homosexuality and World Religions

This is a 9 page paper discussing homosexuality and religion in regards to Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. While in some cases, specific references are difficult to find in ancient scriptures and holy text, other references such as in Islam’s Quran and Hadith, seem quite specific as to the opinion of homosexuality and what, if any, punishment should be given. The Jewish and Christian religions both have conservative divisions which forbid homosexual practice and homosexuals’ participation in rituals while at the same time they also have liberal or reformed divisions which recognize homosexuals in regards to equal rights and respect. Hinduism and Buddhism also have varied perspectives within their own religions as while some Hindu researchers cannot find specific references either way, others refer to the Kama Sutra and its devotion of an entire chapter to gay men. Most Buddhist divisions refer to the precepts of Right Conduct but with some differentiation as to the interpretation of “sexual misconduct”. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

  • 'Coming Out of the Closet' and Gay Social Development

10 pages in length. The social development of a homosexual person relies greatly on whether or not they choose to 'come out.' It is no secret that repressed feelings by trying to be something you are not (i.e., 'straight') can do more harm than good. This is a common choice for many homosexuals because they do not want to cause strife among their family members. But the problem herein lies in the fact that they are trying to be something they are not, which could serve only to arrest their social development. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

  • Summary and Critique of 'Organizing And Activating Effects Of Sex Hormones In Homosexual Transsexuals'

  • Sitcom Portrayal Of Homosexuality

7 pages in length. Prime time television sitcoms often introduce viewers to fringe populations of society whose only real purpose for inclusion is to provide an element of ridicule and sideways disrespect thinly veiled in the form of comedy. The extent to which depiction of homosexuality is not only limited but also skewed is both grand and far-reaching; that typical prime time sitcom portrayals fail to reach beyond the façade of cheap innuendos and site gags speaks to an entertainment culture whose desire is not to provide an accurate or educational representation but rather one that garners high ratings. "Will and Grace" has certainly set a precedent with regard to exposing the general public to an alternative lifestyle many viewers have never fully understood, however, it still lacks significant understanding of the homosexual community by this candy-coated portrayal since the program takes great care to avoid any deeper realities of being gay, lesbian or bisexual. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Some factions of both Catholicism and Judaism have taken a more flexible opinion, however, and the continuing pressure of the issues is sure to result in a continuing trend toward greater receptivity. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

  • Roman Catholic Church and Homosexuality

A 5 page acknowledgment that although homosexuality has been around since the dawn of time, the practice is viewed differently according to the societal context. While homosexuality is gradually becoming a more and more commonly accepted component of our society, the Catholic Church remains one of the staunchest opponents to homosexuality. In short, the crux of the dispute questions the sanctity of traditional marriage as defined between a man and a woman. What is the answer for gays and lesbians who want to raise children beneath a homosexual umbrella that would bring a sense of peace and equity amidst the tenets of sexual discrimination? Many claim it is too much to hope for that social bias begin to wane in exchange for a more understanding and open-minded world, especially what lies at the foundation of all intolerance is a combination of fear and ignorance, an alliance that not only precludes the chance for security and peace but one that also encourages just the opposite. Understanding the extent to which more states allow homosexual parenting than those that do not is an important realization when examining which way the pendulum is currently swinging. 3 pages in length. Man is constantly reinventing itself as a species in order to maintain an ongoing and progressive status; if he were remain idle without benefit of continued growth and advancement as a collective of living beings, he would soon cease to exist. Whether social, political, economic, cultural or technological, progression is the driving force behind the positive nature of change. Why, therefore, is the notion of gay marriage considered so morally offensive that laws must be enacted to prevent it? If there is one thing that reflects man's capacity for progress and change, it is the tolerance to accept gay marriage as a viable alternative to heterosexual unions; to pass judgment by virtue of legal infiltration is for humanity to inequitably pick and choose which aspects of contemporary evolution are recognized based upon nothing more substantial than personal opinion. The ever-present debate over same-sex marriage illustrates how contemporary social perspectives are not as progressive as many claim they are, but rather reflect a level of judgment and intolerance akin to witch hunts and slavery. To presume same-sex marriage indicates anything other than the desire of two people to legally demonstrate their love is to redefine love upon the myopic basis of what does or does not exist between one's legs, reflecting a perverse - if not wholly erroneous - connection to constitutional rights that simply cannot be validated.
