ESSAY ON: Sitcom Portrayal Of Homosexuality

Number of Pages 7

This research paper: 7 pages in length. Prime time television sitcoms often introduce viewers to fringe populations of society whose only real purpose for inclusion is to provide an element of ridicule and sideways disrespect thinly veiled in the form of comedy. The extent to which depiction of homosexuality is not only limited but also skewed is both grand and far-reaching; that typical prime time sitcom portrayals fail to reach beyond the façade of cheap innuendos and site gags speaks to an entertainment culture whose desire is not to provide an accurate or educational representation but rather one that garners high ratings. "Will and Grace" has certainly set a precedent with regard to exposing the general public to an alternative lifestyle many viewers have never fully understood, however, it still lacks significant understanding of the homosexual community by this candy-coated portrayal since the program takes great care to avoid any deeper realities of being gay, lesbian or bisexual. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
