This research paper: This is a 9 page paper on television’s reliance on negative ethnic stereotypes and violence to depict its stories. “The Sopranos” is used as an example. Critics argue that much of television today seems to rely on negative ethnic stereotypes, violence or both to receive high ratings and in doing so portrays inaccurate distortions of reality and in some cases promotes violent acts, ignorance or plays on the fears of the viewers. A good example of negative violent stereotypes in television is the recent popularity of the HBO drama “The Sopranos”. The program portrays Italian Americans involved in the mob and often involved in gruesome violent acts while conducting the rest of their life similar to that of a middle class American family. Although Italians portrayed in the mob is not a new phenomenon in the entertainment industry, it is believed that is does portray inaccurate images of the Italian community and promotes the acceptance of violence in today’s society. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
