The extent to which excessive force is inherent to the fundamental structure of any law enforcement agency is both grand and far-reaching; that offenders erect myriad barriers for police officers to straddle in the attempt to apprehend speaks to the undeniable correlation between force and capture. However, this is not to say police enjoy roughing up perpetrators but rather illustrates the intrinsic need to do so by virtue of the confrontational nature of law enforcement. To this end, a number of viable alternatives to excessive - and even lethal - force have proven effective in both the apprehending of offenders and the mitigation of physical injury.
