ESSAY ON: Oedipus And Antigone: Significance Of Teiresias

Number of Pages 3

This research paper: 3 pages in length. Teiresias' significance in Oedipus and Antigone speaks to the importance of prophecy as it exists in Greek mythology. Teiresias, a famous Thebian prophet, gained his special powers as a trade-off for the blindness Athena cast upon him for accidentally seeing her bathing. Now bestowed with the ability to prognosticate, Teiresias's foretelling becomes an instrumental component in many characters' lives, not the least of which were found in Oedipus and Antigone. The messages Teiresias deliver are not always what the recipients wanted to hear; however, the truth that resides in his disclosures often seeks to alter a given character's entire existence for the better, which establishes Teiresias' most significant contribution to each play. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
