ESSAY ON: Hamlet, Oedipus & Death of a Salesman

Number of Pages 5

This research paper: A 5 page essay that contrasts and compares these three works. Three of the greatest tragic plays every written are "Oedipus" by Sophocles; "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare; and "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller. While these plays are vastly different, as their subject matter and their playwrights are separated by centuries, they also bear similarities. In each play, sexual relationships play a major role in motivating the action that propels the characters toward their tragic fate. Another factor is that these plays also exhibit similarities in structure, as they all follow the parameters of Aristotelian tragedy, as outlined by that ancient Greek philosopher in his treatise, "The Poetics." Lastly, but perhaps, most importantly, these plays relate aspects of the human condition, which is a factor that makes them timeless, as each new generation finds aspects of their own lives within cathartic dramatizations. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
