This research paper: This is a 6 page paper discussing the theme of “doubling” within Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”. Edgar Allan Poe’s 1839 story “The Fall of the House of Usher” tells the tale of a lonely narrator arriving at the House of Usher where lives a friend of his, Roderick, who is undergoing a great deal of mental distress over the illness and eventual “death” of his twin sister. Poe’s use of imagery describes a setting filled with dread, misery and gloom throughout the terrifying story which is eventually revealed. To highlight the dramatic effect of the events within the story, Poe uses elements of “doubling”, parallels and mirroring in order for the reader to further understand the extent to which the events at the House of Usher affect the mental instability of the narrator.
