This research paper: 8 pages in length. Achieving optimum health represents the primary goal of any given modality of medicine; when the disease to be treated is depression, however, there are two schools of thought pertaining to appropriate treatment options. Depression, which causes people to become despondent and pessimistic for no apparent reason, has typically been treated with either pharmacotherapy (medication) or psychoanalysis (psychiatric help). When medication is not warranted because the cause is not chemical in nature, psychotherapy is able to alter the negative thought processes and overall perspective to reach wellness; however, when a chemical imbalance is the primary instigator, pharmacotherapy is an essential tool. Some cases require the beneficial properties of both approaches, reflecting how a combined treatment of both therapies is very effective in the treatment of depression. Bibliography lists 12 sources.
