This research paper: A 7 page research paper that compares the four gospel accounts of Jesus' trial and passion. The gospels offer four separate accounts of the trial and passion narratives of Jesus Christ. The first three gospel accounts are extremely similar, particularly in regards to the Gospels of Mark and Matthew. Due to this fact, scholars believe that Mark, Matthew and Luke all refer to common source, which is why these are referred to as the synoptic gospels (Barnes). The Gospel of John, while obviously familiar with the other accounts, offers an independent account (Barnes). Examination and analysis of the differences and similarities between the various accounts suggests that these ancient writers had their own theological and narrative purposes in mind, as each stresses different events.
