This research paper: A 9 page paper discussing the maintenance and inspection portion of the problems of modern air transportation. Close inspection of FAR 91 (particularly sections 405, 407 and 409) reveals that there is indeed an area in which government involvement in the conduct of business is a positive factor. Required maintenance and inspection of aircraft substantially increases operating costs for both airlines and for private pilot-owners, but the payback is a nation in which air travelers can be assured that the aircraft in which they place themselves has been well-maintained, inspected at every turn and then inspected again before every flight.
