  • Zoo Visits and Changing Attitudes of Children

10 pages in length. The purpose of this proposal is to examine the change in attitude of children who are told the truth about why animals live in zoos. Exposure to animals within a zoo setting is typically the first association children have with species beyond the domestic dog and cat. Giving them a truthful understanding of why wild animals are held in captivity for human enjoyment even though it serves as a tremendous detriment to the animal's physical and psychological well being is the first step in getting children interested in the humane treatment of animals at a very young age. Expectations of this qualitative research questionnaire include a change in attitude from the zoo being a fun place to see wild animals to one of sadness that wild animals are forced to live unhappy lives in unnatural surroundings just so people to look at them. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

  • Eating Pets: Research Proposal

10 pages in length. Nothing can be considered a definite wrong when it exists within the confines of a cultural or religious reality. Despite the fact that other cultures or religions do not condone the particular practice - sometimes even condemning it to barbaric behavior as in the case of cannibalism - this incongruity in lifestyle does not automatically make it wrong. Distasteful, loathsome or regrettable perhaps but not inherently wrong by the standards under which it exists. Such is the case with eating pets - typically defined as dogs and cats - and the uproar it creates in countries like the United States where such activity is considered abominable; for others like the Pilipino, consuming dog is as commonplace as it is for Americans to eat livestock. India, with its universal reverence toward cows, is repulsed by the thought of devouring such a sacred animal. In short, the reason it is acceptable to eat animals like cows and sheep in some countries yet consisted wrong to eat dogs or cats in others is because the same animal is not given the same value in all cultures or religions. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

  • Cons Of Animal Testing

7 pages in length. The writer provides a research proposal and extended report pertaining to the cons of animal testing. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

  • Becoming A Veterinarian

4 pages in length. Some people believe that being a veterinarian is more challenging than becoming a human doctor in light of the many different animal species diagnosed and treated by that single individual. Indeed, the extent to which becoming a veterinarian is both rigorous and rewarding underscores the basic motivation behind the desire to take this career path; that it requires the combined elements of unwavering commitment to animal welfare and sound business sense speaks to the unique duality of this profession. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

  • In Praise of Wolves by R.D. Lawrence Reviewed

This is a 3 page review of R.D. Lawrence’s “In Praise of Wolves”. Spanish born R.D. Lawrence lives on a 100-acre wilderness farm in Haliburton Highlands, 170 km north of Toronto, Ontario and has written over 29 books on nature and wildlife. In the spring of 1983, Lawrence and his wife traveled to Ishpeming in the Upper Peninsula in Michigan to study an untamed but captive pack of wild wolves and compared their behavior to those he had previously studied in the wild and with the two wolf cubs which he himself had raised. During the study and his use of other studies he has conducted on packs in the wild, Lawrence often contradicts other scientific theories in that he proposes that in many ways, wolves in the wild provide a much closer study and comparison to human behavior than do many studies on primates, considered humans’ closest natural relatives. In addition, Lawrence through the use of biological, sociological and psychological comparisons is not afraid to apply human terms to wolves in the text. Instead, Lawrence has found that in many ways, humans could learn from wolf behavior in terms of their handling of aggression (as opposed to the human emotion of anger) and stress in the wild. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

  • History and Ecology of the Chimpanzee

5 pages in length. When one considers the chimpanzee, the first thing that comes to mind for many is the effort put forth by wildlife observer Jane Goodall. The extent to which Goodall studied wild chimpanzees has provided both the scientific and lay communities with a significantly better understanding of their ecology, as well as a clearer picture of their historical evolution as a species. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

  • Making Hunting A Deviant Behavior

6 pages in length. Society is filled with activities not readily classified as deviant within the scope of acceptance when enough people consider them "normal" by cultural standards. The United States - which may have more routine actions deemed normal than other countries because of its multicultural composition - relishes the "sport" of boxing where men purposely inflict pain and injury upon one another to determine who is the best. Americans also enjoy taking the lives of other animals in the name of recreation and then displaying the stuffed anatomy as an example of man's superiority and prowess. The two activities have only one difference: people can decide to put themselves in harms way while animals cannot, an ethical and environmental connotation that demands hunting be deemed deviant. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

  • Massachusetts' Inhumane Racing of Greyhounds

5 pages in length. Greyhound racing in Massachusetts is one of the state's most popular and revenue-driven events. The excitement mirrors that of a horse track where bettors become as involved in the sport's politics as they do in the wagers. On the surface, one might not think that greyhound racing is anything but a fun activity for both dog and spectator, but one would not be privy to the gruesome reality behind the inhumane sport, where it is the residual effect of racing that proves most detrimental to the dogs. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

However, in spite of all the various ways animals serve mankind, there has historically been little thought given to their own right to existence, having always been considered little more than a disposable commodity. Whether it is the issue of hunting, circuses, zoos or racing, animals have long provided -- and will likely continue to provide -- humanity with some of its most basic requirements, all at the cost of the animal's own life. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

  • Legally Protecting Animals in Arizona

5 pages in length. The pursuit for animal protective legislation has been an ongoing – if not frustrating – quest for virtually every American society; while significant inroads have been made in many national communities where such atrocities as cockfighting, animal abuse/cruelty felony status and pet shop conditions are concerned, there is still a long way to go before animals – including everything from livestock to wild horses to stray dogs and cats – are truly protected by comprehensive laws. Phoenix, Arizona is leading the country in this pursuit, having enacted a number of animal protective statutes to help curb the prevalence of abuse, cruelty and neglect. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

  • Two Classical Era Ethical Theorists on Animal Experimentation

6 pages in length. The ethical nature of animal experimentation has long been debated as to whether or not it stands as a necessary element for humanity. After all, the primary -- if not only -- reason animals are utilized in laboratory tests is to further the interests of mankind, often without the least bit of concern for the animals who forfeit their lives in exchange for medical, cosmetic and household product advancements. Classical ethics theorists Emile Durkheim and Immanual Kant may have had similar viewpoints on some issues, but when it came to concerns over the ethical fortitude of animal experimentation, the writer discusses how Durkheim would have befriended the animals' plight long before Kant would have, who adopted a utilitarian concept. • Animal Testing In Cosmetic Labs

8 pages in length. Human vanity - a most distasteful characteristic of mankind - is only surpassed in its enormity by the level of insensitivity required to inflict painful "safety" tests on defenseless animals to make sure cosmetic products are not dangerous for people to use. The irony of such reality is quite telling, inasmuch as man - who holds the position of steward over the animal kingdom - is meant to protect and oversee rather than maim and torture. Add to this the fact that researchers continue to use archaic methods for cosmetic testing when viable alternatives to live animal usage currently exists illustrates how some of the human race must harbor latent power issues if they choose to continue inflicting such unnecessary suffering. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Due to man's encroachment – sometimes accidental, oftentimes blatant and deliberate – this particular type of bat is struggling to uphold its precarious place upon the life chain. Perhaps it is the uniqueness of this species that has caused it to become endangered, or maybe it is because mankind still does not understand the consequential impact his actions have in a synergistic sense to the ecosystem as a whole. No matter the cause, the Indiana bat – who was placed upon the endangered species list in 1967 due to a population decrease of a full fifty percent since the 1930s – is being helped by the establishment of protective reserves and legal enforcement.
