The health consequences of this trend can be personally devastating, which is why this problem is one of the many issues addressed by the Healthy People 2010 objectives, in which objective number 19-1 is to: “Increase the proportion of adults who are at a healthy weight” (FDA and NIH, 2008). Grau, who by comparison illustrates how just the opposite situation can be equally ineffective in raising an emotionally stable child, makes it clear how wealth and status are not ingredients for a stable, nurturing home life, particularly when the mother is emotionally absent from her own daughter's developmental years.
