  • Scott Cook/Colonial Encounters

A 3 page reaction paper that reviews Scott B. Cook's monograph Colonial Encounters in the Age of High Imperialism, which offers a comprehensive overview of the "last and most extensive phase of Western expansionism," which occurred between 1870 and 1914 (Cook xii). The author's stated intention is to "underscore the great variety of colonial experiences," as well as examine the "basic characteristics of imperialism" (Cook xii). This analytical examination of this text indicates that Cook succeeds admirably and achieves this goal. No additional sources cited.

  • Cook and Cook's Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance and Family Relationships

A 4 page paper discussing typical family relationships in 16th century Latin America, during the early colonial period. It uses as its beginning Cook and Cook’s “Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance: A Case of Transatlantic Bigamy.” Today’s Latin American families have many more options open to them, but the attitudes and perceptions of the colonial period persist in the form of tradition. Today’s Latin American families are not as bound to their families – either those of birth or those married into – in practice, but tradition remains as the ideal. Bibliography lists 1 source.

  • Thomas Cook, Shell, and eBay Business Analysis

A 16 page paper comparing and contrasting the industries and types of businesses represented by Shell Oil and Thomas Cook (eBay is mentioned only in passing and is not part of the analysis). All businesses require accurate and useful information on which to base business decisions. The types of information they need will depend on the types of industries in which they operate, however. While most Thomas Cook customers could be expected to have no opinion as to the ethics of that company, many are vitally interested in the same measure regarding Shell. All businesses are obliged to take advantage of the information available to them as a means of increasing their competitive advantage within their industries and markets. The paper discusses environmental analysis, segmentation, positioning and research for both Shell and Thomas Cook. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

  • Food Service at the San Diego Village Inn Motel and Restaurant

A 10 page paper based on a case study of the restaurant, coffee shop, and bar function of a San Diego Village Inn motel and restaurant. The establishment has found itself with neither assistant manager or restaurant manager, and the entire food service function has disintegrated into chaos. A head cook who also served as the restaurant manager descended on long-time wait staff with dictatorial and condescending measures. The staff response was that of rebellion, and the 'new' head cook was discharged within his 90-day probationary period. The company is perennially understaffed and pays enough in overtime to more than justify the addition of some temporary relief workers to ease the stresses faced by overworked permanent employees. No bibliography.
