Written in 1850, during a time when independence was at the forefront of the minds of Americans, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” tells the tale of an oppressive and restrictive society which condemns independent thought. Hester Prynne, as the main character in the novel displays great dignity and free will while being condemned by her community as an adulteress. Rather than submit to their pleas to tell of her lover, Hester chooses silence as an expression of her strength and expression of her freedom of will. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
