This research paper: A 5 page review of the common elements of survival found in these works by Ernest Hemingway and May Angelou. Instead of fighting against the sea, the marlin, and the sharks, as did Hemingway’s Santiago, Angelou is fighting against the societal realities of being female and black. She, like Santiago, is influenced heavily by others perceptions and beliefs in regard to her limitations but like Santiago was able to capture the marlin and bring at least its head back to shore as proof of his accomplishment, Angelou is able to persevere and to use her writing to pull her out of the stagnation of other’s expectations.
