This research paper: A 10 page essay, research paper that, first of all, examines Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" and Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." The writer argues that each author make comments on the nature of evil and relates their interpretation to their own society. These stories are similar in that each author may appear to be talking about a different reality. Hawthorne sets his story in Salem's Puritan past and Jackson's story takes place in an alternative reality where ancient fertility rites were never abandoned.
