ESSAY ON: Criticisms and Comments on William Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline”

Number of Pages 5

This research paper: This is a 5 page paper discussing the criticisms and studies of William Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline”. Critics and researchers have been divided over the centuries as to the origins and historical inconsistencies of William Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline”. Believed to have been written late in Shakespeare’s career, the play is one of the lesser know plays and until recently rarely performed. Originally, critics believed the play to be unpopular because of the inconsistent mixture of times and locations; however, since this can be said to be the case of several other plays of Shakespeare, the unpopularity of the play may be more of an aspect of the “Shakespeare industry” which over the years has promoted several of his plays over others. Due to some recently successful performances of Cymbeline, critics, directors and audiences of today seem to enjoy the open aspects of the play which allow for imaginative direction, costuming and fantasy elements. Just a little over a decade ago however, audiences and critics were not so accepting of these aspects of the play and deemed the play confusing and “a mongrel”. Researchers in Shakespearean studies have elaborated on the cartographic and astronomic details used in Cymbeline which are consistent with some of Shakespeare’s other works and seem to provide evidence that not only is this a play of great workmanship but also was probably not a collaboration. Regardless of the controversies which surround the play however, it is likely that because of the recent revival and acceptance of performances of Cymbeline, audiences of the next generation will be more familiar with the work than audiences of today.
