This research paper: A 6 page paper answering two questions addressing the goals of sentencing and the major problems of today's prisons. The five major objectives of sentencing goals are to achieve retribution, deterrence, protection of society, rehabilitation or restoration. The greatest single problem in today's prisons is the inability of prison management to prevent the entry of drugs and other contraband items from entering the prison environment. The paper provides a description of the "model prison" in which the reachable are identifiable and kept separate from the hardened, and the hardened are brought to understand that they have indeed hit bottom so they can begin to change their lives.
