This research paper: A 5 page paper discussing the issue of civil disobedience from a philosophical perspective, particularly within the philosophies of John Rawls and Ronald Dworkin. Rawls’ approach endorses finger-pointing and loud complaining without effecting any real change. Because effecting change generally is the ultimate goal of civil disobedience, Rawls’ approach carries little if any relevance. The activist would be better advised to weigh choices in terms of Kant’s categorical imperative and to assess which route can best serve the Mill’s greater good, within Dworkin’s (1996) philosophy of the reality of objective truth. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
