There have been impressive changes in the role of warehouses in the supply chain in recent years. They’ve become distribution centres, customer service centres, and e-fulfillment centres. They incorporate and rely on lean manufacturing, a concept introduced by Henry Ford in the early 20th Century, except that warehousing has been at the root of maturing the lean concept with the continuous reintroduction of new warehouse design, equipment, operating methods, and integrating technologies.
