This research paper: A 4 page paper discussing the detriments of offering excuses rather than effort. “My dog ate my homework” is tired and worn, but of course no nine-year-old realizes that until s/he tries to use it with the teacher. The high school student appearing bleary-eyed and lethargic in the early morning after working until midnight the night before can be seen as having a more legitimate excuse for not having her work done, but it still is an excuse nonetheless. Many adults seek to avoid taking personal responsibility for their own actions; exusism is only an early manifestation of that lifelong trap. The paper urges teachers and parents to expect more, and provides the example of the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) that has been so successful in public schools and is based on shouldering responsibility and working hard. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
