Benjamin Franklin and Henry David Thoreau, unequivocally two of America's major thinkers, found much common ground in their respective philosophies, while at the same time touching upon differences that made each man's conjecture uniquely original. Franklin, an inventor and founding father, placed a great deal of emphasis upon a strong democratic government and religious affiliation tempered by thirteen critical virtues, while Thoreau, the foremost Transcendentalist whose essay On Civil Disobedience inspired the great political leaders/passive resisters like Mahatma Gandhi and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., also prescribed to the tenets of democracy but with a far greater appeal toward limited government interference and a populace that took responsibility for its own actions.
