"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy
4 pages in length. The apocalyptic resonance of McCarthy's The Road can be interpreted in any one of myriad ways from a forewarning of the impending fallout from post-911 to the never-ending question of God's existence, however, what truly echo time and time again throughout the story is how mankind's unyielding push into technological advancement will ultimately render the planet barren once humanity has overstepped the line into dangerous knowledge. That the father and son are still alive in the aftermath of such complete desecration speaks to the need for man's self-destruction -– along with the devastation of all other life forms – to be chronicled in some way other than through excavation a millennia from now.
