ESSAY ON: Critical Analysis of Two Articles Relating to Juvenile Criminal Justice: The Effectiveness of Juvenile Boot Camps (Shock-Incarceration Programs)

Number of Pages 8

This research paper: This is an 8 page paper giving a critical analysis of two articles in the assessment of juvenile boot camps’ effectiveness. Two articles are examined on the effectiveness of juvenile boot camps within the justice system: B. Zaehringer’s work in 1998 entitled “Juvenile boot camps: cost and effectiveness vs. residential facilities” (Koch Crime Institute White Paper Report); and, S.X. Zhang’s 1998 article “In search of hopeful glimpses: a critique of research strategies in current boot camp evaluations” (Crime and Delinquency 44(2), 314-334). Zaehringer’s study used national and research intensive data to support his conclusions and analysis of the system which in order to improve its effectiveness would need a much more comprehensive focus on aftercare and rehabilitation. Zhang’s article studied the effectiveness of the studies themselves, excluding Zaehringer’s, but admits he was not comprehensive in the studies that he surveyed. He in turn reported that the overall effectiveness of the boot camp system has not been proven despite the positive goals set by the boot camp administrators. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
