ESSAY ON: Ma Yuan/Artist of the Song Dynasty

Number of Pages 5

This research paper: A 5 page research paper/essay that analyzes a work by Ma Yuan of the Chinese Song Dynasty period. The art of Ma Yuan (c. 1155-1225), along with that of Xia Gui, represents the highest level of Chinese painting during the Song dynasty (1127-1279) (Ma Yuan). During the Southern Song period (1127-1279), court painters continued to favor landscapes as subject material, as they had in the past, but they also favored smaller formats and more lyrical treatments (Southern Song). This examination of a work, Walking on a Mountain path in Spring by Ma Yuan, concentrates on describing its lyric elements, that is, the features of the poem that are designed to evoke emotion on the part of the viewer. Also, a comparison is made between Ma Yuan and Xia Gui. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
