ESSAY ON: The Symbolic and Narrative Use of the Unlikely Character of The Misfit to Portray Christ in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”

Number of Pages 3

This research paper: This is a 3 page paper discussing the use of the unlikely character of The Misfit to symbolize Christ in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” she uses unlikely characters to portray Christ through the use of symbols and narrative “Christology” or insights. In an ironic twist to the reader, rather than use the likely figure of Father Flynn to explore the inner revelations of Christ’s life in its application to the storyline, O’Connor instead uses the unlikely character of The Misfit who is an escaped criminal and murderer. The Misfit’s character and narrative not only allow him to become an interpretive symbol of Christianity but he also becomes a comparative symbol to Christ in that through his narratives he is able to reveal the Grace within other characters such as the Grandmother. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
