This research paper: A 19 page research paper/essay that explores the question of whether or not a line of descent can be traced from Emily Dickinson to twentieth century poets Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop. Examination of literature shows that the preponderance of scholarly opinion supports the idea that a line of poetic descent can be found that runs from Dickinson and travels to both Moore and Bishop. However, the evidence does not support the idea of a linear descent that runs like a straight line from Dickinson to Moore to Bishop, as this descent is more like a branching tree rather than a line of heredity. The relationship between the three poets can be found, first of all, by examining literary scholarship that looks at both thematic and stylistic similarities. In addition to reviewing scholarly comment, however, this relationship can also be shown by examining three representative poems: specifically, "The Wind begun to knead the Grass" by Dickinson; "Poetry" by Marianne Moore; and "Rain Towards Morning" by Elizabeth Bishop. Bibliography lists 17 sources.
